The Alliance Française

The Alliance Française de Malte-Méditerranée has been promoting French language and culture in Malta for more than 80 years. Our roots go back to 1946, when the Circle "Amis de la Culture Française" was founded at the University of Malta — a circle that became the Alliance Française in 1959. Today, more than 300 students learn French with us every year, supported by the same pedagogical standards upheld across our global network.

The Alliance Française network is one of the most far-reaching cultural organisations in the world. Founded in 1883 and coordinated by the Fondation des Alliances Françaises, it brings together 824 institutions across 138 countries, welcoming more than 450,000 students to its language courses and 6 million attendees to its cultural events each year. As Malta's only member of this network, AFMM combines international recognition with a genuinely local presence.

As a linguistic centre, the Alliance Française de Malte-Méditerranée is the only accredited centre in Malta for the DELF and DALF examinations, the TCF, the TEF, the DFP and the Sorbonne Nouvelle certificate.

Beyond language learning, the Alliance Française de Malte-Méditerranée is an active cultural hub open to all. Every month, we screen French and francophone films, bringing together cinema lovers in a convivial setting. Our Micro-Folies project brings a variety of art pieces to Malta though a digital museum.

Throughout the year, our "learning by doing" workshops invite adults and children alike to explore French culture hands-on — through pastry-making, cooking, and visual arts. We also celebrate key moments in the francophone and Maltese calendar: the Fête de la Musique, the Beaujolais Nouveau, and the Bir-Miftuh festival. In September, we take part in the EUNIC Film Festival alongside our European cultural partners. Many of our events are organised in close partnership with the French Embassy in Malta, reflecting the strong institutional ties that underpin our cultural mission.
