Maltese A1.1 Face to face
Bonġu! Titkellem bil-Malti?
(Hello! Do you speak Maltese?)
Let’s start learning Maltese and feel a little more at home here. In this communication-based class, learn the basis of Maltese language. You will develop a genuine feel for how Maltese sounds — because pronunciation, once you understand the logic behind it, is far more approachable than it looks on the page.
Alongside the language itself, we'll explore what makes Maltese unique: a Semitic language written in a Latin script, shaped over centuries by Arabic, Sicilian Italian, Norman French, and English. Understanding where the language comes from makes it easier — and far more interesting — to learn. You'll start to recognise layers of history in words you hear every day.
We'll also dip into Maltese traditions, feast days, and local customs, so that the calendar of village festas and the rhythms of island life begin to make sense in a richer way.
Who is this course for?
Anyone living in Malta who wants to connect more deeply with the island and its people. You don't need to become fluent — you just need a place to start. This course gives you that, along with the confidence that Maltese isn't as daunting as it first appears.
Because the best way to feel at home somewhere is to speak a little of its language.
No prior knowledge of Maltese is required. This is a gentle, practical introduction to the language and the culture it carries.
