The TEF IRN (*Test d'Évaluation du Français – Intégration, Résidence, Nationalité*) is the official French language proficiency test required for administrative procedures in France, including:

• Applying for French nationality (*naturalisation*)
• Applying for a French residence permit (*titre de séjour*)
• Demonstrating your level of French for the Republican Integration Contract (CIR)

What the test covers

The TEF IRN evaluates your oral and written comprehension and expression skills in everyday French. The exam includes:

• Listening comprehension – understanding spoken French in real-life situations
• Reading comprehension – understanding written French
• Written expression – writing a short text
• Oral expression – having a conversation with an examiner

Who can take it?

The TEF IRN is open to adults aged 16 and over. No previous diploma is required, and the test is open to all nationalities. Results are valid for two years.
